"Your Health Insurance Specialists"
The individual mandate, the requirement for individuals to purchase a qualified health plan or pay a tax penalty, is designed to make sure healthy people buy insurance rather than wait until they become ill.
Taxpayers are to indicate on their annual tax returns whether they have purchased qualifying insurance, and those who don’t must pay a penalty or apply for an exemption. In the past, the IRS would accept “silent” returns in which filers left the insurance information blank. In 2017, the IRS were instructed to no longer accept tax returns of individuals who did not clarify their status.
On Jan. 20, Trump signed an executive order instructing federal agencies to interpret the health care law’s regulations in a way that would “minimize the economic burdens” on individuals and businesses.
IRS Tax Penalty for not Purchasing a Qualified Health Plan in 2016?
According to an article from Jonathan Cohn from the Huffington Post on 2/15/17:
A Better Way to Health Care
The National Committee for Quality Assurance ranks Kaiser Permanente Colorado's #1 Private Health Plan and #1 Medicare Plan in Colorado for the 6th year in a row.
“The recent executive order directed federal agencies to exercise authority and discretion available to them to reduce potential burden,” the IRS said in its statement. “Consistent with that, the IRS has decided to make changes that would continue to allow electronic and paper returns to be accepted for processing in instances where a taxpayer doesn’t indicate their coverage status.” However, IRS official material will still provide information about the penalty.
The IRS says taxpayers are still legally required to have health insurance or pay the penalty. The agency also maintains it still has discretion to follow up on filers not indicating health-insurance coverage status.
